ob Description of Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) Student Advocate

Supervises:  None

 

Purpose: The purpose of this position is to prevent initial or continued juvenile delinquency and improve school performance of primarily court referred youth ages 10-17.  The Student Advocate will be employed full-time to provide services in collaboration with school officials, DJJ Court Services, parents, and community stakeholders.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Responsible for conducting all program activities to promote academic, career and social development of students in the program.
• Conduct individual and applicable group social/life skills training using an evidence-based curriculum to address student behavioral issues to improve academic, behavioral outcomes and progress with juvenile court.
• Provide reasonable case management for participants in order to ensure adherence to the individual service plan and attainment of measurable objectives.
• Develop individual service plan goals with clients to address school performance and/or behavioral issues.
• Evaluate student progress on a weekly basis by way of school visits and individual/group sessions.
• Conduct home visits with parents/guardians as appropriate to address student academic and behavioral concerns.
• Participate in providing parenting education sessions for parents.
• Maintain career resources and conduct career awareness activities as appropriate.
• Maintain adequate documentation of services provided.
• Adhere to the requirements of JCPC policy and program agreement for service delivery and confidential files content.
• Collaborate with school officials to maintain effective service delivery.
• Receive referrals from DJJ as well as principals and assistant principals as space allows. Maintain ongoing communication regarding student process.
• Consult with principals and central support staff in program development and maintenance.
• Consult with teachers and school counselors regarding student school performance and progress.
• Monitor student school performance, attendance and discipline by maintaining a monthly school visitation log.
• Report client progress monthly to referring court counselors.
• Responsible for program development and accountability measures.
• Carry out program activities in accordance with program goals and objectives.
• Maintain client files, NCALLIES submissions and submit monthly reports.
• Attend routine Juvenile Crime Prevention Council meetings to report program process.
• Monitor student progress using school performance records to include attendance, academic, and discipline infraction records.
• Conduct 6 month evaluations according to achievement of program measurable objectives.
• Confer with supervisors, school officials, and court counselors based on data in continued program development efforts.
• Adhere to program budget and work with Program Manager to ensure adequate expenditure of JCPC funding.
• Attend routine professional development activities to improve knowledge, program practices, and skills.
• Responsible for annual grant-writing efforts to include the Program Agreement and any necessary budget amendments in cooperation with the Program Manager.
• Other duties may be assigned.

 

Knowledge and Skills: 

• Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently.
• Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

 

Training and Experience: 

 

• Must possess a minimum of a four year degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Criminal Justice and possess at least one year of relevant work experience. Strong interpersonal, organizational, program coordination and computer skills needed.

Salary: Salary Schedule Grade 69 plus local supplement

Salary Range:  $3,439.65 - $6,226.33 monthly

(Based on 30 years experience as a student advocate in a school system)

Full-Time; Permanent; 10 month position
