Reports to: Principal and/or Supervising Teacher

 

Supervises:  None

 

Purpose: To provide individual assistance to allow a student to remain in school with access to the curriculum and educational environment.  Personal Care Assistants accompany the student for the entire school day, maintaining the safety of the student and assisting with basic human functions such as breathing, toileting, eating/feeding as well as any behavioral management needs.  Personal Care Assistants may also be directed to perform secondary job responsibilities in cases such as teacher workdays or student absences.  Personal Care Assistants assist teachers with clerical duties as directed. 

     

Personal Care Assistants are assigned/reassigned to school locations by the Director of Exceptional Children based on individual student needs.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accompanies a student providing constant observation, intervention and assistance as necessary so the student may remain in school and have access to the curriculum and educational environment
  • Accompanies the student at all time during the school day, assisting with mobility, motor skills, behavioral management and employs strategies as necessary to protect the student or others from injury
  • Collaborates with supervising teacher to administer and/or monitor the administration of medication, therapy and/or other special treatment required for the student, which may include lifting mobility impaired students for all transitions
  • Responsible for daily data collection
  • Performs various clerical duties as needed; maintains records of student progress
  • Participates in any required training sessions
  • Assists classroom teacher as necessary to maintain a clean and orderly classroom environment
  • Maintains student confidentiality
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Director of Exceptional Children

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must be able to exert physical effort necessary to frequently or constantly lift, carry, push, pull, toilet, transfer, diaper and feed assigned student
  • Must be able to exert up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects and/or students
  • Must be able to stand for an extended period of time
  • Must be able to stoop, squat, bend, twist, stretch, turn, lift, and carry
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions
  • Must be courteous and pleasant with students, parents, faculty and staff
  • Should have general knowledge of activities performed by classroom teachers
  • General knowledge of daily routines and student handbook rules
  • Must be able to follow procedures in the event of an emergency
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students
  • Ability to motivate students
  • Ability to maintain clean and orderly environment
  • Ability to perform general clerical duties

 

Training and Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma and some experience working physically and/or behaviorally disabled children; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Salary: Grade 51 plus local supplement
